Boots for Alex

26 Aug

Our PC is on it’s way out (I’m typing this on my mac, as if the PC will know if I talk about it and will get even more stubborn!) …. So I’m transferring everything to our other drive and hopefully adding another mac in the near future….(my mac also runs windows XP for my animas insulin pump software…woohoo!)

Anyway, in the midst of cleaning out I found this little movie…No sound but so cute… I can’t believe how much he has grown!  This one is almost 3 years old…Alex was a little over 2 and we had just moved in…

Wanted to find some witty lyrics to post as the title, but a search for Fay came up with F.A.Y. , so that is what I’m running with (not FAY from me…Just hopefully not F.A.Y. from Miss Fay as she comes up the peninsula…

Well, she’s a-comin’, but in what force and tme we don’t really know…

Here’s where I’m tracking:

Cape Weather

If you want to see what else is going on I do recommend NOAA.gov and even our local news and papers can offer some info… I found that News-Press.com is not always amazing on the updating (I usually just head to CapeWeather.com or Wunderground.com for weather info) BUT they were one of the only sources on information when my mom was going through Charley and we were feeling helpless up north….

We have, for the time being, decided to stay put…So we are doing lots of organizing and packing this morning, just in case we need to move….

As far as my etsy shop goes, I will not be shipping again until Friday (8/22)…But as long as we have power and our ‘net connection is up I will be checking in and updating my shop announcement….

Anyway, giant hugs and stocked emergency kits and wishes for safety to all in Fay’s path….

These little vintage catalin/Bakelite cabs are why I stopped beading and started hammering and melting.

I bought these, early last year, from a seller on eBay… The purchase was the ultimate decadence to me then. And I had plans . I was going to set the little cabs in silver bezels that I had found when experimenting with PMC3/Metal Clay…Easy enough.
When they arrived I found that vintage catalin/Bakelite is not a precisely calibrated material. Each piece was just different enough that the die formed bezels, that came with my little PMC starter kit, were of absolutely no use.
So I put them aside.
I melted my first PMC piece. Purely by accident. I was captivated by the mirror shimmy that the liquid silver danced under the flame of my little butane kitchen torch.
I had some wire, so I melted that too. I must have melted a hundred little balls on my soldering block. My husband sat with me and watched while I teased the metal into perfect little orbs and tiny kisses on the ends of wire.
A brief search of the online card catalog for our county revealed a few books on the topics of silversmithing and metalsmithing. Some of them were fairly new, most of them were long out of print and some even rare. I had my husband borrow one for me and I read. I didn’t understand a word of McCreight’s Complete Metalsmith so I found a book by Jinks McGrath that offered a nice cross-section of information- it assumed little-to-no knowledge of metalwork and tools and provided many photographs.
And then I got to work making bezels, and I haven’t stopped since….
